Kaja Funke

Bachelor of Arts Communication Design

I’m Kaja, in love with words, coffee and sunrises – but especially with holistic design that moves, makes visible and tells stories. I’m a communication designer, a strategist, a poet at heart and a firm believer that where purposeful design solutions and aesthetics shake hands, great things can happen.

While I have long since lost my heart to typography, print and paper, I want to actively help shape society, the future and the realities of life through my work. For me, the latter means taking a closer look even where things get uncomfortable and creating space for discourse and value creation through visual translations.

The bookazine burned creates a multi-perspective discourse on the definition, symptoms and subjective experience of burnout – an invitation to look, listen and exchange.

We live in a society where self-worth is too often defined in terms of performance, stress is taken for granted as an inherent part of our everyday lives, and physical and psychological boundaries are pushed in the name of the overwork culture.

 Until we burn out.

Through articles, interviews, and lyrical impulses, burned paints a holistic picture that makes tangible the complexity of the burnout syndrome, possible causes and emotional conflicts between the search and crisis for meaning such as self-image. The bookazine invites readers to critically examine existing social structures, offers an emotional insight into various forms of subjective experience and also provides helpful impulses for dealing with stress and hustle culture.

Only love to my favorite humans – for the valuable exchange, emotional support, liters of coffee and shared lightness.

Thank you to all the professors and lecturers who inspired and guided me during my studies and this thesis.

A big thank you also goes to all the impressive people who shared their experiences and stories with me in the course of intense, personal and enriching conversations.
