Bachelor of Arts Illustration
When the Professor who supervised the school’s new applicants asked what my goal was I said: “I want to have fun.” Whatever I experienced, and however arduous the way ahead is going to be, I want to stay true to the realization in that moment. When life gives you lemons, you make juice. When life gives you trauma, you make art. My name is Cha Soda, also known as Shihoran. I’m a Freelance Artist.

The Villain Origin Story of an Artist
Generational trauma, societal pressure, reasons to live. Setting the scene for the journey of becoming what you must to survive.
“The moment that you feel that,[…] you’re walking down the street naked,[…] That’s the moment you may be starting to get it right.” – Neil Gaiman. When Covid-19 rocked the world in the middle of my student years, I was made to return to my parents’ home to cut the cost of living alone. It was a logical choice, but a very dishonest one; I felt like I was being ripped away from the freedom of pursuing any creative whim; to go where I wanted to go, and to be who I wanted to be. My parents are by no means bad people, but they have this incredible talent to make me and my passions feel utterly worthless. “Get a real job.” and “Art doesn’t make money.” are just a few of the things they’ve said to me. For a long time I have avoided reflecting on how my upbringing affected me and my artist’s journey – this project is the first step of me working through the pains of growing up with parents who are ashamed of you.
I would like to thank my younger self for believing, however quietly, that there is a future in which I can pursue art. I would like to thank my friends for proof-reading, reviewing, and being there for me. And I would like to thank Prof. Cornelia Haas for always guiding my projects with a keen eye, a firm hand, and expert craftsmanship.
