Visualizing thoughts and feelings with pictures has always been more compelling to me than describing them with words. With my illustrated book about people whose lives are determined by fear and loneliness, I want to create more understanding for those affected and encourage rethinking in today’s performance-oriented society – because “a picture says more than a thousand words”.

Sometimes the world is coming apart at the seams.

Then we live withdrawn.
The world seems lost.
A lot has broken.
Can we escape?

Hikikomori – a still relatively unknown disease from Japan pushes those affected into loneliness.

Even though everyone knows the feeling of not being able to cope with expectations and social pressure, of breaking down from self-doubt or being rejected, we try to fight this fear every day. However, there are people who lose this battle, they are called hikikomori and withdraw from society. Hikikomori remain in complete isolation for anywhere from six months to many years. Such a life seems safe to them, but makes them lonely.

In an illustrated book, I want to show the motives behind Hikikomori’s self-isolation and encourage a rethinking of the pressure to perform in society. With more empathy and mindfulness, each of us can help understand the fears of others.
