“Excerpts from “The King in Yellow”

Book illustrations for five short stories from “The King in Yellow” (1895) by Robert W. Chambers

An illustrated book about a selection of short stories from “The King in Yellow” in a contemporary look.

When I read “The King in Yellow” a few years ago for the first time, I closed the book with a shrug. It was said to be an important part of cosmic horror, but I didn’t find it to be all that spooky. But then, a few years later, when I was searching for a text for my project, I remembered this book for some reason. Because a not-so-unimportant reason why my first read of this book was so unimpressive was because of the rather loveless design of the whole thing. I felt like, “there’s room for improvement”. So I set myself the following standard for this project: to support the most important short stories that define the myth of the King in Yellow with strong illustrations, and combine it all with a modern all-over design. I started by choosing the most important short stories of the book and created a layout. Every story has a double-page illustration in color, and every chapter has black and white single pages distributed over the pages, proportionate to the text volume. It also features small vignettes here and there.

Thanks to everyone who supported, inspired and pushed me.
